FORTY-FOUR

She was on the point of leaving the refectory towards evening when she heard her name called softly from the darkness of the porch.

‘Hildegard!’

Before she could turn somebody stepped in front of her.

With no one around and the last meal cleared long ago, she had stayed to think things through. Now the garth was empty. She gasped as she was pushed hard against the wall and when she managed to focus she saw it was Rogella who had attacked her.

She tried to ward her off. ‘Back away! What do you think you’re doing?’

‘Last time we met you said you would speak for us—’

‘I can hardly do that while Bella is still missing—’

‘Bella? Are you sure it is her with Matthew?’

‘Don’t play games. Whichever one of you it is there’s nothing I can do at present. But a promise is a promise.’

‘It had better be one you keep, domina,’ the novice said scornfully bringing her face close. ‘Otherwise it will be the death of you. And that’s my promise!’

‘What on earth are you saying? Are you threatening me? How dare you—’

The novice suddenly had a knife in her hand and pressed the flat of the blade against the side of Hildegard’s neck. It felt like ice.

Through bared teeth she whispered, ‘I want Matthew back. Get it? You’re supposed to be searching for him. Find her. And then you’ll find him. If you have not found them by tomorrow night I shall kill you.’

In a moment she vanished into the shadows and Hildegard blinked as if it was a horrible dream. Such venom. Such spite. Such hatred. What did she mean, she wanted Matthew back?

Her thoughts racing, she gazed into the darkness where the novice had disappeared after her vile threat and pondered the matter.
